Understanding circuit dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease and leveraging it for therapy

This presentation will review how an exaggerated oscillation in the basal ganglia-cortical loop has been linked to motor impairment in patients with Parkinson’s disease. These oscillations in the beta frequency band are suppressed by the two major therapies for Parkinson’s disease, -the dopamine prodrug, levodopa, and deep brain stimulation. The link with motor impairment is such that this activity is now being explored as a feedback signal that can control the delivery of deep brain stimulation, and therefore limit the side-effects of this therapy.
